What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are incredibly thin “shells” made of a slightly translucent porcelain. These shells cover the visible areas of your teeth.

Veneers are completely customized and crafted to fit the exact specifications of your smile. Just as no two smiles are ever exactly alike, no two sets of dental veneers are identical.

At one time, dental veneers were so expensive and so few dental professionals were trained in how to create them that these cosmetic enhancements were mostly enjoyed by public figures and Hollywood elite. Today, thanks to advancements in dental technology, top-quality dental veneers are available to many more people at a more affordable cost.

What kinds of issues can dental veneers correct?

Dental veneers are a very versatile cosmetic treatment. They can correct numerous aesthetic issues at once, which also makes them a great value compared to having multiple treatments for more than one issue.

Some of the cosmetic concerns that veneers can treat include:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Discoloration that can’t be corrected with teeth whitening
  • Irregularities in the size or shape of teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Minor alignment issues

In most cases, people only need to have veneers placed on their top eight teeth, which are the ones most visible when most people smile. That said, veneers can also be created for your bottom teeth.

What should I expect when I get dental veneers?

Once you and your dentist decide to move forward with dental veneers, you receive an injection of local anesthetic during the first part of the procedure to keep you comfortable. Your dentist then removes a small portion of your natural tooth tissue to make room for the veneers.

Next, your dentist takes an impression of your teeth and sends them to the dental lab, where technicians make your new veneers. Temporary veneers are secured in place to protect your teeth until your permanent ones arrive. At that point, you return to have them checked for appearance and fit before your dentist cements them in place.

Because dental veneers require removing a small portion of your tooth tissue, they’re considered a permanent treatment. You can expect to get a decade or longer of wear from your veneers, but they eventually need to be replaced with a new set.
